Euthanasia Rates Drop for Wyandotte Animal Rescue
A recent partnership with Downriver Central Animal Control has contributed to more than 400 animal adoptions at the Wyandotte Animal Rescue in just three months.

A collaboration between the City of Wyandotte and Pound Pals Downriver (PPD) has resulted in a reduction in the number of euthanized animals at animal shelters throughout Downriver including the Wyandotte Animal Shelter (WAS), according to PPD officials.
Officials at WAS agreed to partner with several surrounding cities to create Downriver Central Animal Control (DCAC) in April to provide better services to resdents and animals.
Kim Skidmore, volunteer at Pound Pals Downriver, told Mayor Joseph Peterson the organization has significantly reduced euthanasia rates since the consolidation, and consistently over the past eight years, at Monday's Wyandotte City Council meeting.
Of the 419 animals that have gone through DCAC since April, 404 were adopted and 15 were euthanized, according to Skidmore.
"We believe the consolidation is working ," Skidmore said. "Everything is working out for the benefit of the animals."
Skidmore added the DCAC has a lower average of euthanized animals than the national average. The national average of animals euthanized is about 65 percent. Skidmore said the average at DCAC is about 5 percent.
