WYANDOTTE, MI — A popular metro Detroit Polish restaurant is closing down for good at the end of the year.

Polonus Restaurant, located along Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte, will permanently close on Dec. 31 after nearly four decades, according to a letter signed by co-owners Andrzej and Roman Mucha that was shared in the Downriver and Friends Facebook group.

Andrzej Mucha, who is 76-years-old, told the Detroit Free Press the main reason for the closing is retirement, but that the area has changed over the years.

"When we opened, there was a lot of Polish people (here) and four Polish churches (in the area)," Mucha told the newspaper. "It’s much harder now to run it. I want to enjoy the last part of my life rather than cooking and staying here."

Polonus, which opened in 1988, is best known for its homemade Polish dishes, such as stuffed cabbage, pierogi and city chicken. Other menu favorites include dill pickle and chicken soups, cucumbers with sour cream and potato pancakes.
