Coronavirus Cases Top 1M In MN Since Start Of Pandemic

More than 10,500 Minnesotans have died from COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, according to public health data.

MINNESOTA — Minnesota recently passed a grim milestone in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, with the state recording its millionth case since March 2020.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported 4,155 new cases Dec. 27, pushing the state’s total past 1 million cases.

Minnesota’s total climbed to 1,022,212 cases by Dec. 30, the most recent day for which testing results are available, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

That total includes about 14,200 reinfections, the department’s data shows.

Forty-eight COVID-19 deaths were reported Dec. 30, taking Minnesota’s death toll to 10,516 since the start of the pandemic. Just under half of all Minnesotans who have died from COVID-19 lived in long-term-care or assisted living facilities, the state’s data shows.

There were 1,318 people in the hospital with COVID-19, including 308 in intensive care units, as of Dec. 30, public health data shows.

Less than 1 percent of staffed adult non-ICU hospital beds were available Dec. 30 in the Twin Cities metro, though a much higher percentage of beds was available throughout the rest of the state, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
