MINNEAPOLIS, MN — After a sweltering weekend across the Twin Cities, relief is finally here, but it comes with a catch.

Cooler air moves in Monday and Tuesday, ending the recent heat wave. By Tuesday, highs will dip to the mid-70s, but rain chances rise through midweek, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected.

  • Monday: The heat begins to ease. A 40 percent chance of showers and storms before 1 p.m. High near 81 with gradually clearing skies and a refreshing northwest breeze.
  • Tuesday: High near 75 under partly sunny skies. Just a slight chance of showers during the day, but storm chances increase overnight.
  • Wednesday: Expect widespread rain and thunderstorms, with some heavy downpours possible. High near 74. Rain totals could reach 2 inches in some spots.
  • Thursday: More rain likely, with continued storm chances and a high near 78.
  • Friday into the weekend: Drier and warmer. Highs climb back into the 80s by Friday and could reach the upper 80s again by Saturday.

The break from the heat may be short-lived. A new outlook from the National Weather Service shows Minnesota has increased odds of above-normal temperatures between June 30 and July 6

Much of the state is shaded in orange on the 8–14 day temperature outlook map, signaling a likely return to summer heat heading into the Fourth of July holiday.
