5 Things Rosemount Residents Should Know: It's National Coming Out Day

There's more rain in the forecast tonight, but temperatures will still feel like late summer rather than early fall – which makes it seem kind of strange that it's time to get those second-half property tax checks written.

  1. The National Weather Service is predicting sunny skies today, with a high near 76 and south winds between 5 and 10 mph. There’s a 40 percent chance of showers tonight after 1 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies, a low around 55 and southerly winds from 5 to 7 mph.
  2. There’s less than week until the deadline to pay second-half property taxes for 2011. Because the statutory deadline, Oct. 15, falls on a Saturday, you get two more days: Payments must be postmarked by midnight Oct. 17, with a penalty for late payments. If you’d rather make your payment in person, you can do that at the courthouses in Hastings, Apple Valley or West St. Paul before 4:30 p.m. Oct. 17.
  3.  Learn how to “” – keep it safe from Internet threats – at a District 196 Community Education class from 6 to 9 tonight at Rosemount Middle School. Registration is $29; more information is available by calling (651) 423-7920 or checking the community education website
  4. A free legal will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Galaxie Library in Apple Valley. A representative of the Volunteer Lawyers Network will discuss collection calls, lawsuits, garnishment and bankruptcy. More information is available by calling (651) 438-8244.
  5. Today is National Coming Out Day, which was founded in 1988 – the date chosen because it is the anniversary of the 1987 national march on Washington for gay and lesbian rights. The day is also observed in Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Poland and Croatia – and in the United Kingdom on Oct. 12.
