Five Things You Should Know Today: September 14
Bundle up the kids before school this morning: Today's high isn't even going to hit 60.

- Skies will be mostly sunny today, but the high will struggle to reach 55, according to the National Weather Service. Winds will be from the north-northwest from 8 to 13 mph. And here it comes: There’s a chance of “widespread frost” tonight, with clear skies and a low around 31, and more northerly winds from 5 to 7 mph.
- The Rosemount City Council will hold a work session at 6:30 tonight in Rosemount City Hall. On the agenda: discussion of the emerald ash borer, the 2012 street improvement project, and updates on the community center bench and planter plan, lawful charitable gambling and the Robert Street corridor transitway study. The public is welcome, but public comment usually isn’t solicited during council work sessions.
- Did you know that you can sign up to be notified of emergency situations via phone, text or e-mail? The Dakota Communications Center (DCC) uses computerized mapping software with a high-speed phone system to send out the messages. Check out the DCC’s website to find out how to sign up.
- The Dakota County Community Development Agency’s (CDA) annual will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today at 15848 Emperor Ave. in Apple Valley. The showcase gives the public a chance to take guided building tours and learn about senior services available in the county.
- Today would have been singer Amy Winehouse’s 28th birthday. And it’s also the day in 2009 when actor Patrick Swayze died at 57. Both bummers.
