Greenleaf Physical Education Teacher Gets Teacher of Year Award

George Beran has taught at Greenleaf since 1993.

teacher George Beran has been named the state's elementary school physical education teacher of the year for 2011, according to a news release from Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan public schools.

Minnesota's chapter of the Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance chooses one award recipient each year.

Beran has taught at Greenleaf since 1993, the release says.

There, he , where parents and community volunteers supervise as students walk and bike to school every Friday during the spring and fall.

"I enjoy the enthusiasm, energy and positive attitudes students bring to physical education class," Beran said in the release. He said it's rewarding to teach students about living a healthy lifestyle, and that he feels the community values physical education.

Greenleaf Principal Michelle deKam Palmieri said in the release that Beran has good relationships with students and has an engaging teaching style.

Beran will receive the award at the Minnesota AHPERD conference, in Minneapolis on Oct. 7 and 8.
