Newborn Delivered After Lakeville Shooting Dies Days Later
The child's mother was shot and killed in an Amazon warehouse parking lot, police said. The boy was delivered via emergency c-section.
LAKEVILLE, MN — An infant who was born via emergency cesarean section following a shooting in Lakeville last week has died.
The child died days after his mother, who was shot and killed in the parking lot of an Amazon warehouse on Jan. 8. Kyla O’Neal Fletcher, age 31, was 9 months pregnant at the time of her death.
"We’re proud of the efforts of our first responders and medical professionals who worked so diligently to give this baby a chance at life," Lakeville police commander William Gerl told Patch in an email.

"This is a difficult development for so many who rallied around this little boy."
Gerl said his department is working with the Dakota County Attorney’s Office on the potential of amending charges related to the infant’s death.

Donte R. McCray, 32, of St. Louis Park faces second-degree murder (intentional) in Fletcher's death. McCray was the biological father of the child.
The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 in the 9800 block of 217th Street West, according to Lakeville police, who said the Fletcher was inside her vehicle when she was shot.
She was pronounced dead later that night at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
McCray has a work connection with the Amazon facility where the shooting took place, police said.
