Review of Controversial UMore Area Back on the Docket

Also this week: The Rosemount High band will give a concert and National Night Out will be celebrated on Tuesday.

UMore Park will once again be a hot topic at Rosemount City Hall.

The area, once the site of a World War II ordnance factory, might one day be developed into an eco-friendly community, a collaborative project between the city, Empire Township and the University of Minnesota, which owns the 4,900 acre plot. Last year, residents revolted against the idea, however, citing lingering concerns about environmental contaminants and a perception of secrecy on the part of the University. This week, the council will review comments garnered during an official comment period. The Rosemount council will take up the matter on Monday night, at a special work session after the official meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Also this week:
• The Rosemount City Council will consider a new splash pad in Central Park, installation of four new tennis courts at Erickson Park, and more at two successive meetings, one formal and another informal work session.
• Both Rosemount and Apple Valley will hold National Night Out on Tuesday, a series of block parties and neighborhood barbecues aimed at building closer ties between police and residents.
• An Aug. 7 meeting of Apple Valley's Planning Commission has been cancelled.
• Two Aug. 8 meetings of the Apple Valley city council—one formal, one informal—have been cancelled.
• On Aug. 8, the Rose Parade-bound RHS Band will hold a free concert for the public, from 7 p.m. to 8:30. The concert will take place 2893 145th Street West.
