Head Of Dakota County Corrections Announces Run For Hennepin County Sheriff
She is currently the head of Dakota County Community Corrections.
DAKOTA COUNTY, MN — Suwana Kirkland recently announced that she is running for Hennepin County Sheriff.
She is the current director of Dakota County Community Corrections.
Kirkland is also the president of the Minnesota chapter of the National Black Police Association, according to her LinkedIn.

According to a report by The Minneapolis Star Tribune, Kirkland was also:
- The first Black woman to work as deputy sheriff at Ramsey County Sheriff's Office
- The first Black woman to be promoted to sergeant and commander at Ramsey County Sheriff's Office
- The first Black police officer for Minnetonka Police Department

Kirkland's bid for Hennepin County Sheriff comes after current Sheriff David Hutchinson pleaded guilty to a DUI after he crashed his car in Alexandria in December.

In an interview with CBS Minnesota, Hutchinson said that he won't resign and that he plans to run for re-election.
