Earlier this week, we briefly wrote about what the Vikings did to get down to 85 players. Well, another important date is coming up for cuts.
As Dustin Baker points out in his recent piece over at Vikings Territory, the Vikings will need to get down to 80 players by August 24. The Vikings, in other words, will have a few days following the Indy game to make some more decisions on who stays and who goes. Keep in mind that Cameron Smith’s recent retirement makes life a little less stressful for Minnesota’s decision makers. Instead of needing to go from 85 to 80, Minnesota will now need to get from 84 to 80.

One thing to watch for in the upcoming game is who gets some extended run with the 2s. Of course, we want to see the 1s do a nice job in whatever opportunity is given to them; last weekend’s game was ugly, so we’re all looking for better effort and competitiveness. From there, though, keep an eye on the players who get an unusually long amount of time in the game. It may be indicative of the coaching staff’s desire to give these players opportunity to show they belong.
The Vikings need to get to 53 players by August 31.
