Should Food Shelves Accept Junk Food?

The Eagan and Lakeville Resource Centers no longer keep unhealthy foods on the shelves.

The Eagan and Lakeville Resource Centers implemented a "Healthy Food Policy" in September as a commitment to making health choices, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

Donations of unhealthy foods are redistributed to the Salvation Army. Some of the foods that the center will not shelve, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, include:

  • Chips
  • Canned Pasta
  • Doughnuts
  • Pop
  • Candy

The Eagan and Lakeville Resource Centers are not the only food shelves focusing on healthy foods. With concerns about obesity, diabetes and other health issues, more food shelves are looking at creating healthy food policies. As they make these policies, they are considering whether or not they should ban or limit unhealthy food donations.

What do you think? Should food shelves ban or limit donations of unhealthy food?
