Flying Cloud Drive Cultural Research Study Begins

The study will last about two weeks.

For the next two weeks a cultural resources study will be taking place along Flying Cloud Drive, or Highway 61, from Highway 101 in Chanhassen to Charlson Road in Eden Prairie.

The following is information from Hennepin County on the project:

Residents can expect to see workers walking alongside the road up as well as digging up samples of soil to analyze. Please be mindful of the workers as you drive through the area.

The study is required by the federal government as part of the overall preparation for the county’s reconstruction project that is scheduled to begin in 2015. The study will determine whether any items of historical significance are present in the project area.

At the same time, an architectural history survey is looking for buildings that may qualify for the national register of historic properties.

The county’s project proposes to construct a new two-lane roadway with shoulders, a continuous left-turn lane, right-turn lanes at key intersections, and a multi-use trail on the north side of the roadway. The goals are to replace the existing pavement, improve safety, and minimize transportation disruptions caused by seasonal flooding of the Minnesota River. Construction is proposed for 2015 through 2017.
