Met Council to Vote on Southwest LRT Sept. 25

The vote was originally scheduled for August, however, more time was needed to make the final decisions.

The Metropolitan Council is now scheduled to vote on the Southwest Light Rail Transit project in late September.

According to the Sun Sailor, the Metropolitan Council is set to make a decision on project, and the controversies surrounding it, on Sept. 25. While the Met Council had planned to finalize the project's route on Aug. 28, Chairwoman Susan Haigh agreed to postpone the vote:

“Along with the mayors and county commissioners and other local government officials who sit on the Southwest Corridor Management Committee, I came to the conclusion that to build this project right, we need a little more time to evaluate options, consider comments and deliberate on the solution,” Haigh said in a statement announcing a final Met Council vote now set for Sept. 25.

The transit line extends 15.8 miles from Minneapolis to Eden Prairie. Among the issues surrounding the project are how to interact with existing freight lines in St. Louis Park and Minneapolis, and where to put the required maintenance facility.
