12 Edina Seniors Among National Merit Semifinalists

A dozen students are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The list of semifinalists was released today, Sept. 12, outlining the students still in the running for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships—worth more than $32 million—set to be awarded next spring.

Approximately 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, with more than half of those finalists ultimately winning a National Merit Scholarship.

The 16,000 semifinalists are out of 1.5 million students who initially entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship competition.

Three types of scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2013, including corporate-sponsored awards, college-sponsored awards and $2,500 National Merit Scholarships.

Winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. Those scholarship recipients will join more than 291,000 other students who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
