Cereal-Infused Ice Cream Hitting Minnesota State Fair Courtesy of Edina Residents
The Blue Moon Dine-In Theater now boasts ice cream created with Cocoa Puffs and Honey Nut Cheerios.
A visit to Momofuku Milk Bar in New York City was the inspiration for one of the Minnesota State Fair's newest foods.
Dubbed Cereal Killer Ice Cream, the soft serve concoction from the minds behind , the frozen treat is available in both Cocoa Puff and Honey Nut Cheerio versions.
Edina residents Steph and Mike Olson, who are in their seventh year of owning and running the Blue Moon Dine-In Theater, created the punny dish.

Steph said they tried Corn Flake soft serve at Momofuku Milk Bar, but felt like it wasn't quite as sweet as they like thier ice cream. When a waitress answered their inquiry about other flavors by saying a lot of other customers asked the same question, she said it was an "aha moment."
"A lightbulb went off," Steph said.

The ice cream is made by first soaking a massive amount of the cereal in 10 gallons of milk. The soggy cereal is strained out, then the flavored milk is combined with several "secret ingredients" to create the base for the sweet treat.
The finished product is topped with a small amount of milk, bits of cereal and one of two toppings: banana caramel or strawberry balsamic. It's a lighter product that most ice creams, Olson said, similar in texture to Dairy Queen's soft serve.
Olson said reception has been positive in the first couple of days of the Great Minnesota Get-Together, though it will be hard to top the incredible praise last year's Sweet Corn Ice Cream received.
"It's hard when you hit such a home run, your next couple of at-bats aren't going to come close," she said. "Anything we put out is just going to pale in comparison."
Cereal Killer Ice Cream isn't the only new item available at the Blue Moon this year. The stand also boasts Waffle De Liege—Belgian street waffles—every morning of the State Fair. The authentic Belgian waffles have a caramelized pearl sugar crust coating and come plain or topped with Nutella, maple butter or fresh fruit.
"It's a cross between a waffle and a pastry," Olson said. "Definitely a great way to kick off a day at the fair."
The Blue Moon Dine-In Theater is located at the corner of Carnes Avenue and Chambers Street, next to Adventure Park. The stand operates from open to close every day of the State Fair.
