Edina Police Cracking Down on Failure to Signal

In the second month of a year-long push at curbing problematic behaviors around Edina, the Edina Police Department is going to be stepping up enforcement of drivers who fail to properly signal their turns.

It's one of the most prevalent and under-enforced among traffic violations, according to the department. 

“These violations may pose little safety risk to the driver, but failing to signal has a great potential for accidents caused by other affected motorists,” said Sgt. Scott Kuyper.  

Citations could be issued in extenuating circumstances, but the program is largely geared toward warning and educating residents who might be caught violating the statutes or codes.

Coming months will see police focus on the failure to signal a turn, unsafe equipment, failure to display headlights, bicycle safety, curfew violations, pedestrian safety, child and seatbelt safety, school bus stop arm protocol, speed in school zones, night and snow paring and the "move over" law.

The statutes will obviously be enforced year-round—as they always are—but officers will simply be paying additional attention to the focal point of the month.
