EHS Girls Tennis Shatters Records with 16th Straight State Title Win

The team now holds the state and national record for most consecutive state titles in tennis.

The Edina High School girls tennis team broke a few records Wednesday afternoon, after defeating Minnetonka to win the program's 16th consecutive state title.

The Hornets ironically snagged the national record from themselves—Edina won 15 state titles in a row between 1978 and 1992—for the most consecutive state tennis titles in U.S. history. It probably goes without saying, but they also rank atop Minnesota's tennis record books.

The team's sweet 16th title came in lopsided fashion, with the girls dispatching No. 2 seed Minnetonka 7-0 in the championship match at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

Some posit Edina's tennis dynasty psyches their opponents out on some level. But the unparalleled winning streak cuts both ways, according to co-captain Morgan Marinovich.

"There is a huge amount of pressure," Marinovich told the Star Tribune. "Not from our coach, but from expectations. But mostly from ourselves. No one wants to be the team that has the streak end."

Edina made it to the finals with a similarly convincing 6-1 win over Rochester Century on Wednesday morning.
