EHS Thespians Present Pair of Comedies in Late January

Edina High School students are hoping to cure area residents' winter blues this month with a pair of back-to-back comedies.

Up first is "We Moo Shu a Merry Christmas," is an original comedy written by Edina High School senior Linnea Valdivia and English teacher Fred Cheng. "Moo Shu" was inspired by Valdivia’s six-week workshop at the Minnesota Playwright Center last summer. The show features a cast and crew of 15 EHS students and will also be featured as Edina's entry in the annual Minnesota High School One Act Play competition.

"Moo Shu" will be performed Jan. 25-26 at the Edina Performing Arts Center (EPAC) at Edina High School.

One week later, Edina students will perform author Tom Stoppard's "On the Razzle." Stoppard—who wrote plays like "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" and movies including "Shakespeare in Love"—packed "On the Razzle" with slapstick shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, comic moves and deft wordplay.

A total of 30 Edina students are involved in the production, which runs Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.

Director Tony Matthes said January is "theater month" at EHS.

"There is so much going on," Matthes said. "We have the challenge of a one act play which meets strict criteria for competition as well as 'On the Razzle,' which is has all the fun of a true farce."

All performances start at 7 p.m. on their respective nights, with tickets running $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors.
