Former Public Works Building Coming Down this Spring
The City took bids for the demolition and removal of the building through Feb. 11. The City Council will award the contract next week.

One of Edina's eyesores will soon be no more, with the former Public Works building set to be demolished from its Grandview District home later this spring.
City staff solicited bids from interested parties through Monday, Feb. 11, for the demolition and removal of the building at 5146 Eden Avenue. The City Council will be meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. to consider the bids.
"The proposal would be to pay for that project out of remaining funds in the Grandview TIF district," City Manager Scott Neal said. "[It's] an appropriate source of money for that project."

Neal told Council members he expects the removal of the former Public Works building to be completed by May 31 of this year. He wasn't sure what might occupy that tract of land at this point, but Neal said the City would benefit simply from clearing the old building from the site.
"The belief is that it assists the city in marketing and attracting redevelopment interests in the entire area," he said.

The Edina Fire Department actually conducted some emergency response and firefighting training at the empty building in recent weeks, which naturally caused some damage to the soon-to-be-demolished structure.
