Burglar Arrested Walking Along Crosstown After Hitting Edina Home

Police say William Doyle, convicted six times of burglary, broke into a home in the 6100 block of Xerxes Avenue South and stole cash.

A Minneapolis man with six previous burglary convictions has been charged with burglarizing an Edina home last week.

William Doyle, 63, is charged with first-degree burglary, a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine. The charge carries a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 6 months.

According to the criminal complaint, Edina Police were called to a home in the 6100 block of Xerxes Avenue South just before 11 a.m. Sept. 20 on a report of a burglary.

The resident told officers that he had arrived home and found a man inside the house, wearing what he described as a “beanie” and a “fake black leather coat” and carrying a cane. The homeowner walked away and called police; when he went back to his home, he found the suspect in his back yard, the complaint says.

The suspect walked away, and police apprehended him walking along the side of Highway 62, near Xerxes Avenue. The man, identified as Doyle, was uncooperative and appeared to be suffering from “some sort of medical condition,” according to the complaint.

Police found Doyle’s hat and cane a short distance away, and he was taken to an area hospital.

Officers searched the victim’s home and found a broken window in the back, and a cabinet that had been tipped over and ransacked and an open dresser drawer. There was cash on the floor near the dresser, and the victim estimated that between $40 and $240 in cash was missing.

Doyle remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $40,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Oct. 25 in Hennepin County District Court.
