Red Cow Open for Business at 50th & France

50th & France's newest restaurant opened Monday, Feb. 18, promising gourmet burgers and a wide selection of wines by the glass.

The Red Cow, located in the former Blockbuster storefront next door to Wuollet Bakery, will serve lunch, dinner and late-night fare until 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and until midnight on Sundays.

City Pages' Hot Dish blog recently took a look inside of the restaurant, raving about Chef Evan Connolly's bison burger, poutine and scotch eggs:

It's also got Scotch eggs, which are to 2013 what poutine was to 2012. The highly flavorful banger-style sausage is wrapped around hard-boiled eggs, fried, and served with a spiked mayonnaise.

Red Cow Owner Luke Shimp was previously part of the Blue Plate Restaurant Company, which runs the nearby Edina Grill.

Its wine list is quite lengthy, ringing in at 30-plus different reds and whites and a few kinds of bubbly to boot. Most on the list are available by the glass, with a few more available by the bottle. Beer lovers won't feel left out, either, with around 40 taps on offer, around half of which are from Minnesota or Wisconsin.

The menu is burger- and sandwich-heavy, with a small selection of other entrees, house-made soups, and entree-size salads. Prices are reasonable, running from around $9 to $13. It's one of the few local places to snag a Bahn mi sandwich ($11), which marries pork belly, cucumber, carrots, jalapenos and cilantro-lime mayo on a baguette. There's a reason the sandwich has taken on a cult-like following.

Diners and drinkers will also find a sizeable smorgasbord of small starters to snack on, like poutine ($9.50), ahi tuna crisps ($11), and pastrami sliders ($10). 

While it won't be too useful for a few more months, the restaurant also boasts a 34-seat patio.
