Southdale Medical Building Planning 60,000 Square Foot Expansion

The building's owner wants to add a four-story expansion and more parking spaces.

The Southdale Medical Building is looking to build a four-story, 60,000 square foot expansion along along with more than 1,500 added parking spaces.

The expansion would be to the south of the existing building, at 6525-45 France Avenue, and to the west of the existing parking lot.

Silver Oak Development, the building’s owner, presented plans to the Edina city council on Monday.

“This additional office space will be a benefit to the community and also to the hospital, allowing some critical medical services in a location that directly supports the hospital’s goals but also supports the clinic and the community,” said Paul Reinke, Silver Oak’s president.

The planning commission voted 5-4 against Silver Oak’s proposal with concerns over delivery access, pedestrian safety and the number of trees that would be planted.

The developer made some changes before Monday’s meeting, and council members made small suggestions about additional sidewalks, landscaping, louvers and other small aesthetic modifications.

The developer will present to the council again on Oct. 1

“You’re a long way down the road, we’ve got a little bit to go,” mayor Jim Hovland said.
