Two-Alarm Fire Causes Smoke, Structural, Water Damage to Grandview Apt. Building

No one was injured in the Aug. 31 fire.

A two-alarm Labor Day weekend fire caused structural, smoke and water damage to an apartment building in Edina's Grandview area but left all residents unscathed.

An Edina firefighter spotted black smoke spiraling up from a building on the 5500 block of Hansen Road around 5 p.m. on Aug. 31. A resident had already activated the building's fire alarm system when crews arrived.

“The residents of this apartment acted calmly and were able to evacuate safely,” Edina Fire Marshal Jeff Siems said in a statement. “If a fire alarm sounds, always treat it seriously and evacuate the building.”

A wooden deck on the roof sustained moderate damage and the structure and attic space minor damage. A second-floor apartment received smoke and water damage.

Crews from five cities responded to the blaze, taking less than an hour to extinguish it.
