Where's the Money? Mapping Edina Incomes by Census Tract

Drive through Edina, and you will notice that some areas seem a bit more affluent than others. But just how wide is the disparity between different parts of the city?

Thanks to the efforts of the website Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks, we have the answers to those questions. The site uses data compiled from the 2006-2010 American Community Survey to show median household income by census tract.

The data show that the median household income in Edina ranges from $40,831 to $180,455. The most affluent section of the city surrounds the Edina Country Club, bordered on the west by Hwy. 100, the east by France Avenue and sandwiched between 54th Street and Sunnyside Road. The southwest portion of the city—south of Hwy. 62 and west of Hwy. 100— averages out to $106,302 in median income. Finally, Edina's Morningside neighborhood boasts a median household income of $112,313.

According to the data, the census tracts in the southeast quadrant of Edina—near Southdale Center and Centennial Lakes Park—are among the poorest in the city. The tract with the lowest median income ($40,831) stretches between France and York avenues, 70th Street and I-494. The Southdale Center-housing tract to the north of that is the second lowest, with a median household income of $44,119.

Minnesota as a whole has a median income range of $49,964 to $60,207.
