Winter Weather Advisory: 2 to 4 Inches of Snow Hitting Twin Cities

The National Weather Service's advisory runs through 3 a.m. Monday.

Edina and the rest of the Twin Cities is under a Winter Weather Advisory, which runs through 3 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4.

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities/Chanhassen says snow accumulations could reach 2 to 4 inches, with as much as 5 inches in some areas.

Unfortunately, that means the snow will coincide with people traveling to and from Super Bowl parties.

"A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties," according to the NWS. "Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities ... and use caution while driving."

Snow is forecast throughout the week in Edina, with high temperatures in the low 30s and lows in the single digits.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TWIN CITIES/CHANHASSEN MN

823 PM CST SUN FEB 3 2013

...LIGHT SNOW WILL TAPER OFF LATER TONIGHT...

A WEAK CLIPPER SYSTEM WILL MOVE FROM SOUTHERN SOUTH DAKOTA AND INTO IOWA LATE TONIGHT. THE SYSTEM WAS PRODUCING LESS SNOW THAN EXPECTED... BUT ROADS WERE STILL BECOMING VERY SLIPPERY... WITH A NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS ALREADY BEING REPORTED. THE LIGHT SNOW WILL AFFECT PORTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL AND CENTRAL MINNESOTA... THROUGH THE TWIN CITIES AND INTO PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA. FLURRIES CAN BE EXPECTED LATE TONIGHT. SOME ROADS MAY STILL BE SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY FOR THE MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 AM CST MONDAY.

* TIMING: LIGHT SNOW WILL TAPER OFF BY MIDNIGHT AROUND ALEXANDRIA AND BY 3 AM NEAR ST PAUL AND RED WING.

* SNOW TOTALS: ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 OR 2 INCHES ARE EXPECTED.

* MAIN IMPACTS: THIS TYPE OF LIGHT SNOW IS EXTREMELY SLIPPERY... AND A NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN WEST CENTRAL MINNESOTA. BE VERY CAUTIOUS WHEN DRIVING.
