(UPDATED) 17-year-old Boy Drowns in Wirth Lake

The teenager was swimming with two friends at a closed beach.

A Minneapolis teenager drowned in  this afternoon.

The 17-year-old boy was with three friends at the closed beach, according to Lisa Kiava, spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

"At the time of the incident, three of the boys were in the water swimming toward a submerged dock," Kiava said. Two of the boys who were further ahead heard the third boy call for help and saw him struggling in the water.

The first officers who arrived at the beach waded in the water to try to find the boy. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Dive Team arrived and were able to find his body at about 5 p.m., Kiava said.

His name has not been released.

"They located him in about 7 feet of water about 35 feet from the shore," she said.

The part of the beach where the boys were swimming is closed for construction of a beach house, Kiava said.

With the current hot weather, she said, the Sheriffs' Office is urging swimmers to go to beaches or pools where lifeguards are on duty and that young swimmers should wear life jackets.
