This winter and spring, Robbinsdale Area Schools students in grades 5, 8, 9 and 11 will be participating in the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS).

The MSS is an anonymous statewide school-based survey that helps the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and other state agencies gain insights into the world of students and their experiences. It’s also one of the longest running youth surveys in the nation.

Each school will be communicating to families soon with details about specific survey dates and times, which will happen in February or March.

It’s important for you to know the MSS is voluntary, and families can choose not to have their children participate. When schools reach out with more information, they will include links to opt-out forms for families to use if they don’t want their students participating in the survey which, again, is totally anonymous. In addition, families can request a copy of the survey to preview. Information on how to preview the survey will be provided in an email to families from school administration.

The survey is important. The MSS is the primary source of comprehensive data on youth at the state, county and local level in Minnesota. The survey asks students about how well school is going, their future plans, out-of-school activities, physical and mental health, relationships, substance use and more. High school students are asked about sexual behavior. This useful information about their thoughts and behaviors helps communities and schools develop effective programs and provide better services.

Again, the survey and its results are totally anonymous. To prevent students or families from being identified, students do not provide their names, student identification numbers, or other personal information.

Thank you for your support and continued partnership.
