City Council, School Board Candidate Filing Starts July 30

Also: A longtime firefighter dies, and the Hopkins Farmers' Market is booming.

Hopkins’ election season officially kicks off Tuesday.

Mayor Gene Maxwell, Councilwoman Kristi Halverson and Councilwoman Cheryl Youakim are up for election this year, as are School Board Directors Susan Wootten, Betsy Anderson and Warren Goodroad.

The filing period is open from July 30 to Aug. 13. The last day for candidates to withdraw is Aug. 15. Details on how to file can be found here.

Absentee voting runs from Sept. 20 to Nov. 4. The 2013 election takes place Nov. 5.

The last odd-year election saw residents cast a total of 961 ballots.

  • The Farmers’ Market is booming: The hot weather has the Hopkins Farmers’ Market in full swing after starting off with only a few vendors at the beginning of the season. Get locally grown produce every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Hopkins Artstreet’s performance series at the market also continues Saturday with performances by ERV Dance Studio from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Longtime firefighter dies: The Sioux City Journal reported Thursday that Richard Allen Fjeld, a 20-year veteran of the Hopkins Fire Department, died earlier this month at the age of 81. Services will take place at 10:45 a.m. July 30 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Field was living in Zephryhills, FL.
