Salon 300 Exhibition Returns Saturday

Also: Help the boys' soccer team and enjoy Shady Oak Beach.

The Minnesota State Fair is approaching and that means the time is also nearing for Salon 300: Minnesota State Fair Overflow Show.

The annual Hopkins Center for the Arts show, now in its ninth year, showcases works that didn’t quite make it into the State Fair’s fine arts exhibition.

Artists who pick up their unselected pieces at the Fairgrounds can bring their works directly to the art center. All works with a fair registration form are then accepted into the Salon 300 show.

In the beginning, the show featured exactly 300 pieces of art. However, fair officials now first winnow the pool through an initial online review—leaving fewer pieces, albeit higher-quality ones, for Salon 300.

The show runs from Saturday to Sept. 1 and kicks off with a free public opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Other events happening this weekend:

  • Get your car washed and help the soccer team: The Hopkins High School boys’ soccer booster club is sponsoring a car wash in the parking lot just outside of the Caribou Coffee at the intersection of Highway 7 and Hopkins Crossroads to help raise funds for the team. They’ll be accepting free will donations.
  • Enjoy Shady Oak Beach: With summer on the wane, Shady Oak Beach is on its shorter hours. But you can still enjoy the nice days while they remain. The beach is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Aug. 25. Swimming in the lake ends a half hour before sunset.
