Haulers have been preparing since 2019 for this change, but some may have delays in rolling out weekly recycling services to all their residential customers. The COVID-19 pandemic created challenges such as shortages in commercial drivers and truck parts.

The move to weekly recycling for homes is happening for several reasons:

  • To help the county meet the state’s required recycling rate goal of 75 percent – we’re currently at 56 percent.
  • To increase the amount of recyclables collected. Nearly three out of four county residents said they would recycle more if recyclables were collected weekly.
  • To provide equal access for all residents. Before 2022, seven of the eleven haulers offered weekly collection, but not all residents had those haulers available to them in their city.
  • To meet state requirements for county programs. Dakota County had to select a collection option that would increase recycling as part of the updated Solid Waste Master Plan. Residents (73 percent) and haulers (79 percent) selected weekly collection as preferred over other state-mandated options.

Some residents may experience a cost increase. Residents can save money by asking their hauler for a smaller trash cart size or compare prices with other licensed haulers serving their city.
