PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Joe and his wife, Julia, grew up here, went to school and church here, and chose to raise their family here. They have been married 20 years and have three children: John, Tom and Katie.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: While in college and law school, Joe worked full-time as a law clerk and started a successful business performing investigations for law firms. Atkins has been practicing law since 1991. He has earned numerous awards as an attorney, including being named one of 10 Minnesota SuperLawyers by the “Minnesota Journal of Law and Politics,” for his work as an attorney and for his community service.
PUBLIC SERVICE: A former school board member and mayor, Joe is known for being able to work across the aisle in the Minnesota House. He has passed more bipartisan laws the past five years than any other state representative.
SERVICE AWARDS: For his service, Atkins has received a number of awards, including: “Legislator of the Year” by several groups, including Minnesota Firefighters; Named one of “10 Outstanding Young Americans” by the U.S. Jaycees; “Best Local Elected Official” award several times by readers of the South-West Review; Recognized by the National Federation of Independent Businesses for his efforts to help small businesses and entrepreneurs.
ENDORSEMENTS. Minnesota’s police officers, firefighters and nurses have all endorsed State Rep. Atkins for re-election.
