Last Call

It's out with the old as Wayzata begins a new chapter today in its municipal liquor operations.

After more than six decades, Wayzata’s municipal bar and grill—known to most locals simply as the “muni”—closes its doors today.

The city-run restaurant and adjoining liquor store isn't going far. A modern, $3.7 million building right across the street will house the city’s liquor business.

Today’s grand opening, on the east end of Mill Street, culminates years of planning and at times contentious discussion on if and how Wayzata should stay in the municipal liquor business.

Wayzata Mayor Ken Willcox says the new municipal liquor store and bar and grill will be a “gateway” to the Port of Wayzata and “continue to be one of Wayzata’s favorite meeting places.”

A nostalgic “last call” at the old location takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. today, followed by a ceremonial walk across the street and a ribbon cutting.

The new Wayzata Wine and Spirits and Wayzata Bar and Grill will be noticeably larger than their predecessors. The liquor store will have more than double the floor space, and the restaurant will add about 50 seats inside from the current capacity of 108, along with outside dining. The store is boosting its selection of domestic and international wines and craft beers.

The move has also created new parttime waitressing, bartending and kitchen staff positions.

The old municipal liquor store and bar and grill will be demolished this summer to make room for planned development.

Today’s schedule of events:
