Mound Westonka Future Stars Turn Heads in State Competition

Local kids lock horns with some of the best wrestlers in Minnesota.

Fifteen wrestlers from the Mound Westonka wrestling program recently competed in state tournaments in Albany and Rochester.

First-grader Sam Dioszeghy and eighth-grader Drake Heath both wrestled in the Northland Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) state tournament in Rochester on March 30 and 31. The NYWA is considered one of the most competitive state tournaments, and participants must place in the top two in district competition, and then the top three in region competition to qualify.

Dioszeghy placed third in his weight class at state in the first/second grade division, going 5-1 on the day with four pins. Heath also took home third-place honors in the seventh/eighthp-grade division, going 4-1 with his only loss to the eventual state champion and high school state entrant from Willmar.
