Hospital Guard Dies After Patient 'Elopement' Attack In Chisago County

Police say Andrea Merrell, 43, died after being assaulted during a Dec. 25 incident.

WYOMING, MN — A hospital security guard who was injured during an incident involving a patient "elopement" at M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center has since died, authorities said.

The Wyoming, Minnesota, Police Department said Andrea Merrell, 43, of North Branch died as a result of injuries she sustained during a Christmas Day incident at the medical center’s parking lot.

Police said officers were dispatched to the hospital at approximately 5:23 p.m. after receiving a report that a patient had run from the emergency department after being placed on a hold.

According to police, a Wyoming officer encountered a 35-year-old male suspect in the parking lot.

The suspect was described as noncompliant and physically resistant during a prolonged engagement before being detained. Police said no deadly force was used.

Authorities said the suspect assaulted a member of the hospital’s security staff before law enforcement arrived. That security officer was later identified as Merrell.

Merrell was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment. Police later confirmed she died from her injuries.

The suspect was identified as Jonathan Winch, 35, of Chisago City. He is currently being held at the Chisago County Jail. Charging decisions have not yet been announced.

In a statement, M Health Fairview confirmed Merrell’s death and described her as a valued member of its security team.

"We are heartbroken to confirm that our colleague, Andrea Merrell, has died as a result of injuries sustained when she was attacked while responding to a patient elopement at the parking lot of M Health Fairview Lakes Medical Center," the health system said.

"Our hearts are with her loved ones and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time," the statement continued. "We are focused on supporting our teams and ensuring they have the resources they need."

The Wyoming Police Department extended condolences to Merrell’s family, loved ones, coworkers, and hospital staff, calling the loss tragic.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation. Additional agencies that responded included the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office, Lakes Area Police Department, North Branch Police Department, Forest Lake Police Department, Wyoming Fire Department, and M Health Ambulance.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional information will be released when appropriate following review by the Chisago County Attorney’s Office
