ORONO, MN — A Fourth of July celebration appeared to go awry overnight on Lake Minnetonka, with several boats ablaze after people set off fireworks in the area, according to police.
Authorities responded around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday to the 1400 block of Shoreline Drive in Orono, where multiple boats were reported on fire at the docks in Brown’s Bay, police said. Five boats and a large portion of the marina dock were damaged, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance video revealed multiple people lighting fireworks around the docks just before the fire broke out and then running from the marina, police said. Several people were detained and an 18-year-old was arrested and booked into county jail, but later released, according to police, who said the case remains under investigation.
