Share Yours! Today is World Poetry Day

Did you know the oldest surviving poem was written in present-day Iraq?

March 21 is World Poetry Day. Launched in France back in 1999 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, World Poetry Day recognizes the importance of poetry across the globe.

The United Nations' official World Poetry Day web site says the main objective of the annual celebration of poetry is intended to "support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities."

Thought to have originally been sung, the earliest poetry dates back thousands of years—when the oldest surviving poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, is believed to have been written in what is present day Iraq.
