Westonka's Tyler Hebig Earns Win No. 100

Westonka Wrestlers Beat Delano; Place 5th at Veldman Invite.

Westonka's varsity wrestling squad recently picked up another Wright County Conference win and finished high at the tough Veldman Invite.  

On Thursday, Jan. 26, the White Hawks defeated Delano 49-24 to up their conference record to 4-2 and 15-4 overall.  

“Delano had a few holes, but we really wrestled well and it was a fun night,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.

It was a special night for junior Tyler Hebig, who pinned his opponent and, in doing, so earned his 100th career victory.  

“Tyler is a hard worker and a great kid, and it was very satisfying to see him hit that milestone,” assistant coach Eric Rodelius said.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the White Hawks traveled to South St. Paul High School and competed in the 16-team Veldman Invite.

The White Hawks earned a solid 5th place finish, placing nine wrestlers in the top seven.  

“It was nice to see some great competition and find out where we’re at," coach Munsterteiger said. "We had a tough round in the finals, but it was a great learning experience for us."

Placing for the White Hawks in their respective weight classes were: Sam Lungstrom, 7th place; Travis Peterson, 6th place; Tyler Ihli, 4th place; Sam Bennyhoff and Ryder Schmidt, 3rd place; and Ben Rogers, Tyler Hebig, Bryan Tierne, and Will Van Sant, 2nd place.

News from the farm system:

The freshmen squad competed in the ninth-grade League Region Tournament on Saturday, and placed three wrestlers. Kwin Retterath earned a 6th place finish; Noah Sweet and Noah Byers placed 5th; and Ryan Reid took home runner up honors.  

By placing in the top two, Reid qualified for the state 9th Grade League tourney in Champlin Park on Saturday, Feb. 4.  

“Ryan is a talented wrestler, and I’m excited to see what he can do at state,” added freshmen coach John Wardlow.
