Osseo Area Schools ISD 279: National School Counseling Week: School Counselors Make A Positive Impact For Osseo Area Schools

School Counselors play an insurmountable role in the lives of students. During National School Counseling Week (Feb. 7-11), Osseo Area Schools recognizes the contributions and tremendous impact school counselors have on ensuring students have the essential support needed to succeed.

School counselor Judy Anderson spent the last seven years at Brooklyn Middle: A Steam School. It was her first position after college, and one that she finds great meaning. She takes a holistic approach to providing services which includes anything from meeting with students to making sure they get on and off buses safely with their jackets.

“My first group of students is now seniors and I’ve had some of them visit. I’ve run into them in the community. Some say “Ms. Anderson, it is so great to see you!” and when you get little things like that, it makes it all worth it,” Anderson shared.

Anderson is planning to attend commencement in June to watch her students graduate and move on to their next chapters, but it is the building culture and work environment that keeps Anderson at Brooklyn Middle School. She is actively involved with the Teachers of Color Mentoring program, and she uses her means to strengthen the community that connects her.

“It has been really nice having everyone work together. I never knew if I would like working with middle school, but I fell in love with it. I felt like for the seven years I have been here, I have made a big difference,” she continued.
