MAAP chooses the winner each year based on the following criteria: the school/program must provide a model in leadership, curriculum, structure, outreach, outcomes, and innovation from which other schools can take inspiration, and should reflect the vision and mission of MAAP (to lead, promote, and support innovative learning experiences for all Minnesota students).
Two teachers nominated OALC for their individualized learning with high expectations, a welcoming and inclusive environment, and holistic support for students and families. They also acknowledged OALCβs culturally-responsive teaching through implementation of the Contracting, Listening, Exploring, Action, Review (CLEAR) Model and transformational change through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Teachers at OALC said, βThe scholars at OALC are beautiful, brilliant learners who can and will achieve at high levels -- when given the opportunity and support to do so. We have never seen a staff more willing and able to foster this brilliance among scholars."
OALC will receive this state-wide award virtually and will be honored as the MAAP School of the Year at the annual conference, on Friday, Feb. 4, from 12-1 p.m.
