The City of Minneapolis is supporting Youth Violence Prevention Week 2.0 as summer ends and the school year approaches. Activities and events Aug. 23-29 will encourage the start of a healthy and safe school year.

Youth Violence Prevention Week helps call attention to the issue of youth violence, identifies strategies to combat this public health epidemic, and promotes the positive roles young people and adults can play in making their communities and schools safer.

• Community BBQ hosted by EMERGE North 4 Project Youth 12-3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 EMERGE Career & Technology Center, 1834 Emerson Ave. N. This event will feed the community, build good will between youth and adults, and serve as an opportunity to distribute food and supplies to the community, highlight nonviolence, and promote COVID-19 safety and vaccination information.

• Open Mic & Healing Circle hosted by Lieutenant Sunnie 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25 Youthlink MN, 41 N. 12th St.Open mic and healing circle event where young people can have open space to sing, dance, rap, vent, journal, “be” without expectation, and focus on positivity.

• Movies in The Park hosted by T.O.U.C.H Outreach & Corcoran Neighborhood Organization 7:30 p.m. or dusk Wednesday, Aug. 25 Corcoran Park, 3334 20th Ave. S.  Family-friendly movie in the park with free snacks and drinks to provide an intergenerational opportunity for the community to have a safe and fun night, engaging and building together.

• Peace Treaty Glenwood hosted by Innovative SOULutions 3-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 Glenwood Ave & Morgan avenues northThe event will feature a 3-point contest, free food and prize giveaways, violence prevention and safety information, small Black-owned businesses and local artists, and grief and healing resources.

• Hopewell Summer Celebration by Hopewell Music Cooperative - North 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 Webber Park, 4300 Webber ParkwayThe event will feature a partnership with Strong Roots Foundation, Appetite for Change, North United Methodist Church, Camden Collective, Minnesota Orchestra, Minneapolis School of New Music, and THUNDERWALL for an afternoon filled with free food, henna, bouncy houses, and other fun summertime activities. There will be free school supplies for all Northside students.
