Here are the top three stories today in Minneapolis:

  1. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey commended the Minneapolis Police Department for taking hundreds of guns off the street this year. "Over the last 28 days, homicides are down by 60 percent," said the mayor. "So are we there yet? Hell no, but they're making progress." Mayor Frey added that the community can celebrate the police's efforts while still working toward transforming policing. (CBS Minnesota)
  2. A new initiative in north Minneapolis could soon turn a vacant ice arena into a roller skating rink. The "Roll North" initiative launched its social media pages on Thursday, posting a statement about efforts to open a rink in the currently-unused Victory Memorial Ice Arena. Eric Moran, who ran last year as the Minneapolis Parks Board Commissioner in District 2, is leading the efforts to create "a destination for North Minneapolis." (Bring Me The News)
  3. A man was fatally shot in north Minneapolis on Thursday evening. Minneapolis police responded to a Shotspotter alert on the 1800 block of Sheridan Avenue North just before 10:00 p.m. As officers arrived on the scene, they were informed the victim had arrived at North Memorial Center suffering from gunshot wounds, later succumbing to his injuries.
