University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel announced on Wednesday the university would drastically reduce its relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department following the killing of George Floyd by a police officer on Monday.
“We have a responsibility to uphold our values and a duty to honor them,” Gabel wrote in an email to students and staff.

Gabel said the university would no longer contract with the Minneapolis Police Department for additional law enforcement support needed at large events like football games and would no longer use them for specialized services like the K-9 Explosive detection units.
University police will continue to do joint patrols and investigations with the MPD “that directly enhance the safety of our community.”
“I do not have the words to fully express my pain and anger and I know that many in our community share those feelings, but also fear for their own safety,” Gabel wrote. “This will not stand.”
