On July 8, a Minnetonka officer attempted to make a traffic stop of a motorcycle without license plates. As the officer began following the motorcycle, which was traveling north on Shady Oak Road near Excelsior Boulevard, the driver made an abrupt 180-degree turn, then accelerated to 98 mph (in a 40 mph zone), traveling southbound on Shady Oak Road.

The officer used his lights and siren in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the driver. A neighboring police agency became involved in the pursuit and observed the driver flee on foot after crashing the motorcycle. Officers from both agencies caught the Montante a short distance from the crash site.
He allegedly admitted to accelerating with the intent to elude police.
