Letter to the Editor: We Need Old Keys!
Keys for Kids encourages helping others and the environment by recycling unwanted metal keys.

To the Editor:
Keys for Kids, is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization operated by volunteers collecting, sorting and recycling keys to benefit kids. Keys for Kids is encouraging kids to help others and their environment by recycling unwanted metal keys.
Since February 2011, Keys for Kids volunteers have collected over 500 pounds of wasted metal, in just keys. Many local businesses are supporting Keys for Kids as key collection sites. Many schools are also collecting keys by participating in our program, “Students Recycling Keys.”
We are reaching out for support from the community to reach this goal. We have concern we will not reach our goal of 1,500 pounds this year, currently volunteers have collected and sorted approximately 120 pounds of keys.
Our goal this year is to collect 45,000 keys. This would equal 1,500 pounds of wasted metal that can be reused. This year’s key drive proceeds benefit the Sunshine Foundation, the original wish granting organization.

According to the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau, the State of Minnesota showed a population of 5,266,214. If each resident donated just one key, we could make a donation large enough to grant 61 dreams presented by the Sunshine Foundation to children in need of our support. This would also equal 154,888 pounds of wasted metal which can be reused.
