Leer began running track his sophomore year to stay in shape for the upcoming soccer season. He attended college at Pomona in California where he competed in track and field and earned seven track and one cross-country All-American honors.  Leer has become one of the elite mid-distance runners in the country and made bids for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams.
