Minnetonka Man Charged With Using Others' Social Security Numbers

Out of four attempts at opening bank accounts in other people's names, police say Malik Tywan Davis succeeded once and was given a loan in the amount of $12,937.

Police believe a man from Minnetonka attempted to use other people's social security numbers to open bank accounts and take out loans.

Malik Tywan Davis, 39, has been charged with felony identity theft for using identities that were not his own with the intent to commit, aid or abet an unlawful activity.

On March 4, Minneapolis police were dispatched to Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union in Minneapolis on a report of identity theft in progress. Bank officials told police that Davis had attempted to open an account using a fraudulent social security number.

After further investigation, police believe Davis tried to open accounts previously and succeeded once out of the three times:

• On Feb 26, he allegedly attempted to open an account in Roseville using a dead man's social security number.

• On Feb. 27, he allegedly attempted to open an account at a Minneapolis bank using someone else's identity.

• On Feb. 28, Davis allegedly applied for a loan over the phone. This application was accepted, and a loan was given in the amount of $12,937.

In an interview with police, Davis allegedly denied using anyone else's social security number and simply got the numbers mixed up. Police say he claimed that when applying for the loan over the phone he gave his actual number.

A criminal history check revealed that his real name is Anthony Abraham Medlock (DOB 2/7/1969) although he has been charged in court as Malik Davis.
