Tonka Hockey Hut Arrives in Minnetonka

What would make a former day trader settle down to own a small shop?

That would be a love for hockey. And the dream of filling a niche within the local hockey program.

Co-owner Robby Martin (along with Steve Joos) has opened Tonka Hockey Hut. The Shorewood shop is now open at 19245 Highway 7 right down the road from . The building also contains His House Thrift Shop and is next to Tino's Cafe Pizzeria.

"We are a Minnetonka family, and we wanted to be able to offer a convenient spot for Minnetonka families to get their skates sharpened, find a great sweatshirt to wear to the football games on Friday night, or buy a blanket to keep warm in the rink," Martin said. 

Martin, who is on the board with the Minnetonka Hockey Association, has been kicking around the idea of the the shop for the past couple of years.

"I just wanted to become more of the fabric of the community," he said.

What services and/or products does your business provide?  We specialize in custom skate sharpening and sell high turnover hockey stuff like tape, laces and mouth guards.

Additionally, we have started to bring in a lot of cool Minnetonka apparel for toddlers to Hockey moms and everyone in between. We aspire to become the place where people want to come to get cool Minnetonka “stuff.” We will be placing orders for apparel frequently and in smaller quantities so as to keep the inventory fresh and exciting. 

What are your specialties? We specialize in custom skate sharpening. We offer traditional skate sharpening hollows as well as the Flat Bottom V by Blackstone Sport. We take a lot of pride in the selection of Minnetonka apparel we offer. You won’t find anything like it anywhere else!

What is your price range for your products or services? A single skate sharpening is $6, but we offer a card that gets you 20 sharpens for $90, thereby dropping your cost per sharpen to $4.50. As far as apparel goes, we will have a range from $15 for a t-shirt to $55-$60 for a sweatshirt and price points in between. Figure skate sharpening is not currently available.
