Ed Dammer, 81

Ed Dammer, age 81 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis following a short illness. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Monday, November 28th at the Mainstreet Moravian Church in Northfield with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield with full Military Honors. Visitation will be Monday at the Church 1 hour prior to Services.

Edgart William Dammer was born July 2, 1930 near Blackduck, MN, son of Edward and Emelia (Holtz) Dammer. He was raised on the family farm along with his sister and 5 brothers and attended the nearby country school. Following school he moved to Dennison to work as a farmhand. There he met Dorothy Bickel whose parents owned the neighboring farm. They were married on July 7, 1951 at the Northfield Methodist Church.

Ed then joined the Army in 1952 as the Korean War escalated and began basic training in Augusta, GA. He served in Ankara, Turkey as part of the Army Signal Corp. Following his service, he and Dorothy made their home in Northfield and Ed began a 30 year career at the Koch Oil Refinery, retiring in 1992. Never one to remain idle, he held numerous part time jobs before and after retirement including servicing the washers and dryers at St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges and maintaining Casey’s Car Wash.

Ed and Dorothy enjoyed dancing, playing cards with family and friends, and were very active with the Mainstreet Moravian Church as members and volunteered for many church projects. They enjoyed traveling with their daughters when they were young in car trips out West. There were also trips in the winter to Arizona and many charter bus trips with friends from Northfield. He fished in Canada with work friends every June for many years. Ed was a proud member of the Northfield V.F.W. and the Color Guard, and had an ability to fix almost anything that broke.

Ed Dammer is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughters Jan (Mark) Tiggas of Eden Prairie, Sandy (Kevin) Schum of Edina; brother Karl Dammer of Rockport, TX; sister Edna (George) Brewer of Saginaw, MN; grandchildren Kara (Taylor) Cisco, Andrew Schum; great granddaughter August Cisco; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Al, Mel, Walter, and Herb Dammer.
