
Valborg Hallan was born August 22, 1917, in the hospital at the Spring Grove, Minnesota, to Albert and Clara (Jensen) Hallan. She was baptized (October 7, 1917) and confirmed (August 30, 1930) at Trinity Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. She attended Sunday School and Parochial School at Trinity Lutheran and her public school education started with a 6 week “Spring Primary” taught by students of the Teacher Training Class. Grades one through twelve were continued in the Spring Grove Public Schools. During this time she was a member of church and school choirs, 4H Club, and Girl Scouts. She graduated from high school in June 1934 and went on to attended the Teacher’s Training Department of the high school for one year. She taught 4 years in two different one room country schools in Houston County, starting at $45 a month. She spent a year at Winona Teachers College, after which she could teach in a town school. She moved to Blue Earth, Minnesota, and taught 4th grade for 7 years. In 1946, she moved to Northfield for 31 years of teaching - again mostly 4th grade. During all this time she kept taking classes by correspondence and summer school. She had a one year leave of absence to care for her dying parents. After they passed away in October and November, she spent the spring term at Winona Teachers College to completer her BA degree. During the summer months, she continued taking classes and doing some travel. She was a member of teacher’s organizations and later the Retired Teacher’s Association. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. In retirement, she continued to enjoy living in Northfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all 15 of her aunts and uncles. Survivors include several cousins and their families.
Val passed away Sunday evening, April 8, 2012, at her home in Northfield, at the age of 94.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, April 12, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev Mark Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by Dan Fenn. Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Grove. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the funeral.
